Two horses meeting nose to nose at the pasture fence

What a beautiful day it turned out to be for Red Clay Ranch's annual Spring Open House. Despite the forecast of rain, guests enjoyed a cool, sunny, and dry day at the ranch.

Over the following 36 hours, the ranch received 2.5 inches of much-needed rain. The fields are green, and the horses are loving it.

Visitors are welcome beyond special events, and the Burns and Pruitt Guest Cottages offer a peaceful way to experience life at the ranch.

Tom and Frankie and the Coats That Would Not Shed

Tom and Frankie are the only two horses at Red Clay Ranch living with Cushing's disease, also known as PPID. This age-related condition can cause horses to grow long, curly coats that do not shed properly, along with other health concerns. Both horses are over 25 years old and require attentive care, including professional trimming after the danger of cold weather has passed. The Red Clay Ranch team watches them closely for signs of discomfort or complications. With proper care, medication, and attention, older horses with Cushing's can continue to live safely and comfortably. Tom and Frankie receive the lifelong care they need thanks to the support of the Red Clay Ranch community.

A New Shelter for the Herd

Red Clay Ranch's newest run-in shelter, sometimes called a loafing shed, is already giving the horses a safe and comfortable place to rest.

Although the horses chose to stand outside during the recent rain, they made use of the shelter during the heat of the sun. Thanks to donor support, horses throughout the pastures have access to man-made shelters whenever they choose to use them.
